What this means
Start with the exact decision in front of you.
A performance assessment is an evidence-gathering process, not simply a conventional examination. Its scope and preparation should be understood without rehearsing or contaminating the evidence.
Immediate priorities
Organise the position before responding.
Read the assessment scope and practical instructions
Identify health, disability or reasonable-adjustment issues early
Keep contemporaneous evidence of current duties and practice

01
Understand the assessment's defined scope
A GMC performance assessment provides an independent opinion about a doctor's professional performance against relevant standards, including Good medical practice. It may be used during an investigation or tribunal process, and an assurance assessment can inform monitoring of undertakings. Read the direction and practical guidance carefully. The selected areas, records, interviews or tests should reflect the concern; the assessment is not a general vote on whether the doctor is a good colleague.
Request clarification where the specialty, period, clinical setting or alleged deficiency is unclear. The doctor should understand logistics and permissible preparation without attempting to rehearse an artificial performance. Ordinary updating, familiarity with current guidance and organised access to authentic records are different from coaching an answer or changing documents. Raise disability, health, language or other adjustment needs early enough for a fair assessment arrangement to be considered. Any response should connect this point to the documents and decision actually under consideration.
- Identify the clinical domains and standards being assessed
- Clarify scope before the assessment begins
- Request reasonable adjustments with supporting information early
02
Prepare evidence without contaminating it
Preserve clinical material exactly as held, including audit trails and the surrounding episode of care. If records need explanation, provide a separate account. Current job plans, scope of practice, appraisal, audit and supervised observations may help the assessors understand the setting. Volume is not a substitute for relevance. Build an index explaining what each document shows and keep confidential patient information within the secure route specified by the GMC. A dated, source-linked case file helps preserve that distinction as the matter develops.
People assisting with an assessment should understand their role and answer from their own knowledge. A colleague questionnaire or interview must not become a coordinated testimonial exercise. If a factual error appears in assessment material, record the correction and its evidence promptly. A professional disagreement with an assessor should be expressed through reasoning and standards, not by dismissing the assessment simply because its conclusion is unwelcome. Its practical significance must still be assessed against the individual evidence and procedural stage.
- Keep original records and audit trails intact
- Index current-practice evidence by assessed domain
- Preserve the independence of colleagues and assessors
03
Respond to findings with a targeted plan
Once a report is disclosed, distinguish factual inaccuracies, methodological limitations and substantive findings. Check whether the assessor stayed within scope and whether conclusions follow from the observed evidence. Where a deficiency is accepted, identify its seriousness, reach and remediability. A response may need educational supervision, retraining, audit or restriction tailored to the particular skill, rather than a generic commitment to improve. Its practical significance must still be assessed against the individual evidence and procedural stage.
Assessment findings form part of the wider regulatory record; they do not alone dictate the final outcome. Case examiners or a tribunal consider them with other evidence, the doctor's response and current risk. Document what was done after the assessment and how effectiveness was measured. If safe practice requires temporary limitation, describe it candidly. Overstating competence despite clear findings can undermine insight, while accepting more than the evidence supports can distort the case.
- Separate factual correction from professional disagreement
- Match remediation to each evidenced performance gap
- Measure change through observed or audited practice

Advice is provided only by the regulated firm that accepts a matter.
Common questions
Clarifying the route without assuming the outcome.
Is a GMC performance assessment just an examination?
No. It is an evidence-gathering process that can use different methods to provide an independent view of specified areas of professional performance.
Does an adverse assessment automatically lead to suspension?
No. The report is considered with the rest of the regulatory evidence. The decision-maker assesses current risk and the proportionate outcome under the applicable process.
