Start with the statutory sanction range
After finding UPC, SPI or a relevant criminal conviction, the PCC considers whether to impose no sanction, a reprimand, penalty order, suspension or erasure, subject to the Architects Act and current guidance. The order should follow the established facts and public-interest purpose. Do not propose a sanction by analogy to another profession without checking the distinct statutory powers and ARB policy.
Assess seriousness using the nature of the professional failure, harm or risk, duration, repetition, responsibility and any aggravating features. The fact that a client obtained civil redress does not remove the disciplinary question, while absence of proven loss does not necessarily make dangerous or dishonest conduct minor. Keep the analysis grounded in the PCC findings; allegations that were dismissed should not return indirectly through sanction submissions.

Show insight, remediation and present competence
Insight should demonstrate understanding of the professional obligation and effect of the conduct, including on clients, colleagues or public confidence. Remediation should be observable in current practice. Depending on the finding, evidence might include revised client-care systems, independent design review, updated competence work, audited insurance controls or complaint-handling changes. Explain when each measure began and how its effectiveness was tested.
Personal mitigation such as health, workload or difficult project circumstances may explain context but is not the same as reducing future professional risk. Present it accurately and support sensitive claims appropriately. References should disclose that the writer knows the PCC findings and has a basis for assessing current conduct or competence. Generic praise from uninformed supporters may carry little weight and can weaken an otherwise careful mitigation case.

Understand effect and publication
A suspension or erasure affects use of the protected title and appearance on the Register in accordance with the order. A penalty or reprimand may also have insurer, employer, tender and professional-membership consequences. Obtain the precise start and duration, and do not assume an appeal automatically delays the order. Plan a lawful handover of projects and communications without overstating what the PCC decided.
PCC hearings and decisions are published, and ARB may issue a news release in appropriate cases. Check the decision for factual accuracy, especially names, project descriptions and dismissed allegations, through the available procedural route. Reputational concern is real but does not determine the public-interest sanction. External statements should quote the formal outcome fairly and avoid attacking complainants or witnesses after a public hearing.
